Saint Patrick with ShamrockShamrocks have been a symbol that represents Ireland for centuries, ever since Saint Patrick used the shamrock as an analogy for the father, son and Holy Spirit. But if you have shamrock seed how long before you will be able to see a little stem spouting or have a full bowl of shamrock on your windowsill?

Shamrocks need light to grow but not in direct sunlight and also needs moist well drained soil. A mild fertiliser or plant food might be necessary to get the seeds moving a little bit and from there it is smooth sailing as your shamrock begins to grow. It should take 2 – 4 weeks before your shamrocks begin to sprout and at around 10 weeks you should have a full shrub of Shamrocks. If you want a full, bright and bushy shrub of shamrocks try to keep the temperature of the room they are growing in at about 50 to 70 degrees.

ShamrockDon’t get worried

Every year shamrocks can go dormant, roughly 3 – 4 times depending on which type of shamrock you have. You will know it is going dormant because the leaves will start to wilt and once that begins you need to stop watering you shamrocks. Take them off the windowsill, mantel piece or where ever you have them store them in a cool dark area, like under your kitchen sink (provided you don’t keep the bleach in there as well).

Growing shamrocks can be very easy once you stick to the general rules and they also make for great Irish gifts. General Rules: Moist soil, 50 – 70 degrees and stop watering once it goes into the dormant stage. After that you can safely enjoy your shamrock and the best time to begin growing shamrock is in late July and early August.
